Timeless Sadist's Cliche
For the longest time, all the adults I know have been doing something (in my opinion)sadistic and they just simply enjoy it and even more so when the victim is more perturbed by it. And they never stop doing it over and over again. And they don't think anything is wrong with it.
I believe you've seen or maybe yourself have done this before. Each time when a relatively new baby or toddler comes into presence, they'll fall victim to this. Somehow in some way, someone will carry or hold the child's hands and then say "come follow me", "go home with me", "say bye bye to mummy/daddy" Then either or both parents would step away and start waving and mouthing goodbye.
You know what happens next, in a matter of moments, the child begins to understand from his/her confusion and then panic, or cry or both. The more frantic the child is, the harder the adults laugh. Well not all respond this way though, I've seen really calm ones, either they don't mind or they are totally oblivious to the situation. Like the one that happened in church today.
To some extent, it's mildly sadistic isn't it? Teasing the child in such a manner, putting the child through that mental torment and to be feeling insecure and distressed at the same time. So what if they recover from that really quickly and even forget the whole thing totally. The fact is, it did put the child through that. Might have already done some effect to the child's esteem or whatever.
Something different happened today though, something I never seen or thought of before. Because that little tot was unaffected and probably don't know what's going on, she just followed whoever beckons her to. (Her innocence just made her even more cute than her already uber-cuteness) Then aunty joanna said "Cannot, we must teach(has this sense of authority and power when she says it) her. otherwise next time she anyhow follow people." Okay, makes full sense, but to me only aunty joanna has the licence to do this. I don't believe this teasing is mainly for the sake of educating the child.
I'm sure people will do this to my child next time, but I might not play along and I won't definitely won't do this to any kid. Poor asian kids... I think, I just can't imagine caucasians doing that.
